Howard County is one of the nation’s most outstanding places to live, work, and play! Located in the center of Maryland just minutes of the Baltimore and Washington D.C. beltways, Howard County has a balanced blend of pastoral farms, historic towns, suburban communities, and urban lifestyle. Diversity surrounds from Columbia’s world-class arts and cultural offerings to Old Ellicott City, Historic Savage Mill, and Elkridge with shops, museums, historic sites, and cozy restaurants to the up-and-coming Maple Lawn Community with its boutiques, specialty services, and fresh concept restaurants. With all of this and so much more, it’s no wonder Columbia and Ellicott City regularly rank top places in “America’s Best Places to Live” by MONEY magazine. With rural and urban settings all within twenty minutes it is convenient to mix and match experiences for the perfect combination of historic and hip, recreation, and rest and relaxation.
In parts west there is an abundance of homegrown offerings and hidden gems. At Heron’s Meadow Farm the plants may be seedlings and need a few years to reach maturity, but it is well worth the visit to sample the farm’s quality BLTeas and see the pottery made on-site. At Clark’s Elioak Farm you’ll find the Enchanted Forest, a famous 1950’s theme park featuring dioramas and figurines that were rescued and lovingly restored by farm owner Martha Clark. The farm is also a popular spot for pumpkin patches, friendly farm animals, produce, and grass-fed meats. Food Plenty, a locally owned and operated farm-to-table restaurant, is the perfect complement to a visit to westward attractions.
Suburban meets urban in Downtown Columbia. The newly redeveloped Merriweather District is an arts and culture hot spot. Nationally renowned Merriweather Post Pavilion, known for its long history of popular music acts, is now also home to composer Darin Atwater’s Soulful Symphony – who for nearly twenty years dazzled and delighted audiences with performances that celebrate America’s diverse musical and cultural history. Additional seasonal entertainment can be found at the Chrysalis Amphitheater. Nearby, the Columbia Lakefront features free events every night of the week during the summer months. Intimate year-round offerings include Broadway shows at Toby’s Dinner Theatre and jazz, blues, and comedy concerts at both the Soundry and 18th & 21st
Nestled in the east, just minutes from the Baltimore Washington International Airport, is Elkridge with its new landmark, the Guinness Open Gate Brewery & Barrel House – the first Guinness brewery on American soil in over 63 years. A visit to the brewery pairs perfectly with a meal along the banks of the Patapsco River at the Elkridge Furnace Inn, an 1800’s inn turned restaurant specializing in authentic French flavors from the grounds gardens and nearby farms.
